Today was the Summer Games 10k, I was really mentally, physically, and spiritually ready for this race. I drove up to cedar around 5:00 a.m. by myself to go run the race. I got some good carbs in with some graham crackers, a yogurt smoothie, a bananna, some toast, and some G2O. I got to Cedar around 6:15 got all my stuff and did a mile warmup with Joe (Predog). Then it was time to get on the buses and head up to the race. I felt ready, relaxed, and was feeling fast today. Me and Dave talked about are splits we were going to hit and were going to push each other the whole time. Now it was time to race, i did some striders and was ready. I'll tell you by splits what happened.

Miles- I got a 30:32 on my Garmin but started it a little late, so these are Garmin Times

Almost all the course is downhill with a little tailwind and a cool morning down Cedar canyon, some little rolling hills on the trail at the end.

1- 4:45.87- Me and Dave are neck and neck and we pass Hip Hop Jose

2- 4:49.07- Still neck and neck, i start pulling away just a little and feeling good

3-5:02.56- I start pulling away just a little more feeling great, can feel calves starting to get a little sore. Probably around 14:40's 5k

4-5:02.16- I decide to take off and summon Dave to come with me, but he doesn't. I get into a nice calm fast stride and feel great (kinda like Ryan Hall at the trials) Get a sip of water at the station and poor the rest on my head. Hit the little running Trail.

5-4:59.29- I am still feeling great, have to work a little harder, but keep the commposure and am lovin this.

6-5:01.54- Still feeling amazing and hear the bagpipe player and get excited to win my first 10k. This is a really exciting day, and I am stoked.

.2-52.00-I finish the race in a great time of 30:32 on my garmin but official 30:35.4 (4:55 mile pace) about a 2 minute PR. I am really excited and think i could of pushed it a little harder if I had someone pushing me. I feel great and love this race. It does not really even hurt me like track races. The farther the distance the better for me. Dave comes in behind me and then the rest of the field. They all did great and it was a great race for everyone.

I got the fastest time for my age division and only 15 seconds behind Joe Wilson last year. It was a really good day for the Running Warrior today. Can't wait for Wasatch and some more 10k's like the Deseret News 10k on July 24th.

Did about a 2 mile cool down with Bill after. My calves started to tighten up after the race and are really sore so i'll have to take care of them.

Oh my goodness little man you are smokin!!! That is so impressive. You probably could have finished a marathon with all that pre race food:) Can't wait to see what you do in races to come....

From Predog on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 00:13:53

Hayden, that was an awesome race...I tried to hang with y'all but I knew with a 4:55 mile (for me) at the start that I didn't have enough endurance (yet) to hold that kind of pace...but you did awesome and maybe after a few more months I will be a little more competitive and you, Karl, Holt, and I can push each other and do some sweet stuff.

From missee on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:02:11

Impressive!

From Superfly on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:53:52

Good job Hayden. But it's hip hip Jose- not hip hop Jose. Keep working in the right direction and your going to have a great running career. WBR should be a good time.

From dave holt on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 13:22:10

Although hip hop Jose has a nice ring to it! Great race buddy!

From Dustin on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 13:26:20

Great race and thanks for the ride home. Just keep training hard through the summer and then great things will happen this fall during cross country.

From Karl on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 15:09:01

Dude sweet race! I so wish I could have ran it, but we will push each other on the deseret news. Dude you are going to be awesome in xcountry. Take state for sure!

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 15:41:11

Your time was probably about the same as Joe's or faster because the course was different. This time, according to Dave, they moved the start back.

From Lybi on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 17:33:06

Wow! Fabulous race! I can't believe that amazing time! Congrats on the win. You definitely deserve it.

From Predog on Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 18:14:20

so are your calves killing you like mine or am I just being a pansy? Dunno bout you, but I can barely walk.

From James on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 02:16:17

Good race! Way to take advantage of a fast course and beat the old coach. Check your email for WBR updates.
