AM: Alright here we go. This race was not pretty. I woke up this morning and just did not have the mindset. I didn't have the mindset the whole week and just felt so fatigued and tired leading up to this race. I got there did some warmups and got ready for the race. The goal was to run a great race and beat Karl and just bring out the miles i have been training at the race. It did not work out that way though. We took off and from the get go i could feel my legs were not going to hold up and were just fatigued. I stayed with Karl till about 1 mile then he took off and i just slowed down and could not get going. I just tried to gut it out. Then the last .5 Jon Hermanson of Cedar passed me and i didn't even want to catch him. My mindset was completely left and i had nothing left and felt dead. I was pretty upset over this aweful race, but will take some good things out of it too. The heat was bad too and for some weird reason i always have my worst races in the heat.

First i have been training really hard, harder than any high school kid i know and the training has taken a toll on my body. So i think i am in a fatigue valley right now and just need to stay positive and taper to 40-50 miles a week for the rest of season and i will pop out of the valley and plateau or peak right at the right times. I will be okay, my training will catch up to me and push me up and i will be able to stick and beat the best. This will all be okay i just need to make sure i go back to my disciplined lifestyle and get to bed early and make sure to go to all my practices, eat really healthy and go back to how i was when i had the good races this summer. Here we go Hayden just keep a strong mindset and you know what to do. I have put to much work in for a bad season and the work will pay off. Lets get ready for a great SUU meet next week. The heat was bad too and for some weird reason i always have my worst races in the heat.

Don't stress too much about it Hayden. It's the first race of the year and you need to cut back to at most 50 mpw the rest of the year. Just start relaxing more and having fun while your still in high school. Then you'll start putting the peddle to the metal. Plus you still ran a 16:01- not too bad for a poor race.

Hayden, I think your on the right track bringing the mileage back down a bit during the season. Like Clyde mentioned try to reduce the stress and just go out and race and enjoy your senior year. It is important to have goals, and it is good for people to know what your goals are so they can help you work to achieve your goals. However, don't get too down on yourself if everything doesn't just come together all at once. I'm sure you understand it is a process. Look how far you've come in just the last couple of years. This is just the first race of the year, so just assess the things you liked about your race, and then make note of the things you didn't like or think you could do better in the future. I'm sure you are already doing some ting like this, just remember each race provides you with that much more experience and things you can learn from and then use in the future.

I would caution you in regards to tapering mileage. Doing so usually leads to a loss of aerobic fitness and subsequent crash by the end of the year. I experienced this both years of my high school xc career, and several years in college as well, where I would do high mileage in the summer, then back down to the level of the rest of my team during the season. It wasn't until I kept my mileage steady that I finally excelled and was able to hold form (and improve) over an entire season.

Rather than backing down mileage, I would back down pace and intensity, primarily on easy days. In addition to recovering during runs, your ideas of sleep and nutrition will really help as well. In a championship mindset, nothing really matters until the conference, district, and state meets anyway; the rest is just training and practicing how to race.

Take this for what it's worth. Obviously this advice is completely unsolicited. Most of all, listen to your coach, and follow whatever instruction they give you. I'm just some guy on the internet.

BTW - 16:00 is a good time for this early in the season. You should be able to chop off 30 seconds or so.

Hayden, as you know Paul is not just some guy on the internet. I think he usually has some of the best insight and advice out there, plus he has competed at almost all levels and all distances and from what I know he has had some really good coaches.

Hayden, I just got around to working on photos from DesNews. Below are links to a few I took of you. Good luck this season!

Hey, don't stress too much, the first race of the season was always rough for me too--I just didn't have quite the competition you do :) You'll get back in the groove. As for the tapering, I would venture that you are the only one who knows what your body needs at this point...sometimes you just have to ease up even when it doesn't necessarily make sense on paper. My coach always said to "listen to your body." But do it smart and still work hard, maybe just shift your focus to the speed/strength a little more instead, while still maintaining your endurance rather than building it. Just my two bits. Stay tough in your head. you'll do much better next time.

From Karl on Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 20:54:56

Hey buddy! You know you really have come a long way since last year. You still ran a pretty decent time and it's just the first race. Don't get too worried about these first races. They are not that important. Just keep working hard until we get to the big races later on closer to state. Just enjoy these first races.
